“Jabbik”

July 28, 2009

It was good to hear a story about Hungary on BBC Radio News just now, and the topic was important too, the rise of the extreme right wing, and the situation of the country’s gypsies, but I was actually irritated by the item because the newscaster and the reporter both referred to the Jobbik party as the “Jabbik”. Maybe I should be happy about this mistake. After all, this makes them sound like the party of yobs that they mostly are, but I wonder: can it really be so difficult for the reporter, Dominic Hughes, to learn how to pronounce the key words and names?
